► New VW T-Roc R confirmed for 2027

Volkswagen is readying a hot new T-Roc R, which will keep VW’s renowned EA888 engine when it arrives in 2027.
Revealed in camouflage form at the press launch of the new second-generation T-Roc, it’s our closest look yet at the new R model. Previously, it has only been seen testing in mule form, with Volkswagen using the closely-related Golf on raised suspension to hide the car’s design.
But we now know the T-Roc R is well on its way. Set to arrive in 2026 alongside full-hybrid variants of the T-Roc, a first for Volkswagen, the R will keep the latest-generation EA888 engine and continue to be paired with 4Motion all-wheel-drive. It’s expected however, to be adapted to feature a mild hybrid element, required to ensure its compliance with upcoming Euro 7 standards, rather than to boost performance.
Full performance figures are still under wraps but we know it will share the same 328bhp engine as the latest Golf R hot hatch, representing a 32bhp increase compared to the old model. A sub-5.0-second 0-62mph time is likely, and its top speed is expected to be limited to 155mph, potentially with the option to raise the electronic limiter, as it is on the Golf.
Design changes are still, quite literally, under wraps, but through the camouflage you can discern it will have a completely different grille to the honeycomb effect on the standard car and upgraded cooling. Revised bumpers can also be seen, while a four-exit exhaust system will feature, with this camouflaged featuring the optional Akrapovic exhaust system. VW’s renowned Lapiz Blue colour will also be reserved once again for the R.
Though fully blacked-out windows didn’t allow us to look at the interior, expect the usual sports seats, carbon-fibre detailing and also blue detailing throughout.
All other standard versions of the new T-Roc are powered by hybrid setups, with a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid engine available from launch, followed next year by a 201bhp 2.0-litre mild-hybrid petrol. The T-Roc will also be the first Volkswagen to get new full hybrid engines, which will launch in 2026.
