► TomTom unveils a new road alert assistant
► A new TomTom app to complement the latest product
► An alternative option to the Ooono Co-Driver No.2
TomTom, a name synonymous with sat nav innovation, has pulled the wraps off its brand-new road alert assistant – an on-the-go co-pilot designed to give drivers an extra edge behind the wheel. The new system aims to deliver real-time road alerts straight to your dashboard, promising a more informed and stress-free driving experience. The news comes alongside the announcement of a new TomTom smartphone app.
Tom by TomTom is a 48 x 48 x 14.7mm device that uses a combination of LED lights and an audio buzzer to alert drivers about upcoming speed cameras, road hazards and traffic conditions. This means that it can relay information to the driver without the need for a screen or even voice alerts, leaving the driver to remain focused on the road ahead.
‘We are proud to introduce our latest TomTom app and Tom by TomTom—two new solutions that redefine the driving experience,’ says Pim Spaanderman, managing director for consumer at TomTom. With a look to prioritise safety, provide real-time alerts and use insights from a community of users, Tom is set to compete established brand Ooono and its Co-Driver No.2 device. According to Ooono over four million units have been sold already.
Distractions are ever-increasing
Driving used to be a simple endeavour, but with the advancement of technology things can very quickly start to get a little complicated. Modern cars are fitted with ADAS alerts and banks of screens that can distract drivers. Take the new electric Mercedes GLC for example – it comes with a 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen.
In addition to this, devices like dashcams and speed camera detectors can often take up valuable real estate on your car’s dashboard or windscreen, increasing the risk of distracted driving. Tom’s small size means it can easily be mounted on the centre console or dashboard without impeding your view.
All this sounds familiar, right?
Traditionally brands like Garmin and Road Angel would rule the roost when it comes to speed camera detectors, but after Ooono was founded in 2017 it offered an alternative solution to safer driving. The Ooono Co-Driver No.2 is a screen-free device that can warn of cameras, hazards and traffic information.
Like Tom, The Ooono Co-Driver No.2 offers a subscription-free service which is compatible with Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Both devices utilise an extensive network of users and an impressive mapping database to enhance the driving experience.
If you’re struggling to make the choice between the Tom and the Ooono, then pricing won’t make things easier for you. Tom by TomTom is available to pre-order via TomTom.com and will be available to buy from Amazon in October at £69.99, meanwhile the Ooono Co-Driver No.2 can usually be found on Amazon for the same price.
