► Fragment teams up Tag Heuer
► A monochrome take on the Carrera Chrono
► Just 500 to be made
You’re looking at the Carrera Chronograph X fragment, a new minimalist piece that sees the Swiss watchmaker team up with fragment – a Japanese streetwear brand headed up by Hiroshi Fujiwara.
Based on the original Carrera design from 1963, this fragment edition begins with a relatively compact 39mm case, waterproof to 100 meters. It’s 46mm wide lug-to-lug and just 12.3mm thick, so should be just as wearable as the standard watch. Above that, like the standard watch, you’ll find a domed sapphire glass box with double anti-reflective treatment.
However, being a collaboration, the Carrera Chronograph x fragment limited edition gets a few striking tweaks: there’s now a curved flange, with a contrasting outer flange – but the biggest difference here is the black-on-black dial. This gives this limited-edition Carrera a far crisper, more monochrome look than the standard piece. It adds an element of Omega Speedmaster that is an interesting twist on the usual Carrera look.
There are other changes too, though they’re considerably more subtle. For example, the date window has its one and eleven figures replaced by the fragment brand’s lightning bolt symbol. The chronograph hands are rhodium-plated too, and the tachymeter scale also uses a lighter grey colour – again showing the fragment influence. It’s not a huge departure, but it’s there for the collectors and Carrera aficionados.
Inside this limited Carrera uses the in-house TH20-00 that boasts impressive stats. It’s got an 80-hour power reserve along with a five-year warrant. At the rear you’ll find an exhibition case back with internals personalised to also show fragment’s contribution to the watch.
Just 500 of the watches will be made, and each will feature a special numbered engraving on the case back. The Tag Heuer Carrera Chronograph fragment limited edition is on sale now.
