Is the famed Flachbau about to make a return? If these pictures are anything to go by, Porsche could well be cooking up a reimagined version of the legendary 911 Slantnose.
Snapped where else but the Nürburgring, these spy pictures show a curious 911 that has the rear of a 991-spec Porsche, and the front of something altogether very different.
The traditionally circular headlights of the standard car look to have been replaced with what could well be a flat, foldable headlight system. Pure Flachbau-spec. Unfortunately, the mule pictured here employs fake headlights stickers to obscure the real details.
So, what is it?
Both Porsche and Manthey do a lot of testing around the ‘Ring, but a few other cues points to this being an official Stuttgart production. In May 2025, Porsche trademarked the names ‘Flachbau’ and ‘Flachbau RS,’ which is often the sign of an upcoming model.
What’s more, Porsche also has a history of releasing reimagined takes on its most historic sportscars. Just a few years ago, Stuttgart released a 935 homage (based on the GT2 RS running gear), and at Le Mans 2025 Porsche also revealed the 963 RSP.
Although a one-off, it’s yet another example of the brand delving into the archives to create something new and achingly exclusive. So if the Flachbau does return, expect it to be incredibly expensive and available in very limited numbers. Still, let’s hope Porsche is actually bringing it back.
