Back when Volvo revealed the ES90 saloon (which just began production) it also gave us a teaser of its next SUV; the Volvo EX60. Now, Gothenburg has released another teaser of its electric SUV ahead of the 2025 Munich motor show.
Why? Probably because two of the EX60’s main rivals, the BMW iX3 and Mercedes electric GLC have just been unveiled. Perhaps Volvo didn’t want to miss out the motor show buzz.
What does it look like?
The original video (screenshotted above) showed the rear part of the mid-sized electric SUV, with the rest obscured by a sheet. What we could see didn’t come as a huge surprise; like the larger EX90 SUV and the ES90 saloon, it featured Volvo’s now signature C-shaped lights and pairs them with two further vertical light strips. Other than that, it was hard to make out much of the newcomer, which is due next year.
The new teaser just shows a shadowy side profile. Again, there are no real surprises here, but we should see more as the marketing campaign ratchets up.
Expect the rest of the car to continue Volvo’s new ‘machined from solid’ ethos, which is another way of saying the car will look solid and robust, whilst still being relatively futuristic and aerodynamic. It’s present on the EX90, but most obvious on the ES90, which looks chunky but has a sleek 0.25 Cd drag coefficient.
What do we know about the new 2026 Volvo EX60?
The EX60 should appear in 2026 and will run on the group’s SPA3 platform – the generation after the SPA2 platform that the EX90, ES90 and Polestar 3 currently run on. Volvo says SPA3 is capable of underpinning cars smaller than the EX30 and larger than the EX90, but the EX60 will be positioned right in the middle of the range.
Like the ES90, and later EX90s, it’ll use 800-volt technology for greater efficiency and faster charging. ‘We started on 400 volts on the SPA2 architecture, and then we wanted to upgrade that, partly because of range and because of charging speed,’ Volvo CEO Jim Rowan told CAR.
‘As we go forward, we will be moving everything to 800 volts,’ he added. ‘We’ll upgrade the EX90 in one of the model-year changes to an 800-volt system. And then, of course, the ES90 starts at 800 volts and the EX60 on SPA3 will come out on 800 as well.’
State-of-the-art 800-volt systems used to be the preserve of higher-end EVs, but the importance of 800-volt architecture has made it prolific among Chinese brands. This in turn has driven the cost of the technology down.
‘If you look at China, and you look at the Chinese competitor set, nearly all the new models coming out are 800 volts – some of them even 900,’ explained Rowan. ‘And because a lot of the power electronic components [are] getting done there, the price of 800-volt components is coming down, because that’s where the volume is.’
With that in mind, the new Volvo EX60 should be able to achieve a mid-range price and 800-volt architecture when it arrives in 2026.
Anything else?
The EX60 will be Volvo’s third software-derived car, so it’ll use a fully compatible software and hardware stack. In the long run, that will result in a less fragmented range of cars, making them easier to update, and easier to improve throughout their lifecycle.
Think of how Apple updates its smartphones, regardless of their generation and age. It also means the data generated from the cars will be more relevant and easier to manage and update in future.
